There's a good chance that the Federal Election Commission will head into 2008 without enough confirmed members to act. What then? Former FEC Chairman Brad Smith and Paul Ryan of the Campaign Legal Center weigh in. Plus, a campaign reform loophole as big as the Ron Paul blimp.

Good on them! The sooner the FEC is consigned to the dustbin of history the better. It's a total breach of core First Amendment Rights.
I for one hold it as unassailable that I have a right to say what I want, when I want, about who I want, any time I want and bureaucrats be damned.

Good for you, Dale! Of course you won't mind if I and my friends buy a huge billboard, right next to your home, and put on it, in twenty foot letters, "Dale Amon and his entire family are lawbreaking Musilm fundamentalist terrorists! Arrest them now!"
IT'S ONLY my right. Right?
Bob alluded to the 1960 elections being "free for alls." I wish I knew what happened in 1960 and what he meant by that.
Great story, but Bob missed a golden opportunity by failing to ask Mr. Smith a key question which Paul Ryan alluded to, specifically, "If your company is indeed a neutral entity existing only for profit, would you be willing to accept a fee for placing Hillary Clinton's name on your blimp? Mr. Smith's nostalgia for the glory days of the past (without FEC oversight) was droll-- i wonder how Huey Long or Boss Tweed would used the internet, Fox News, blogs, text messages or indeed, blimps?
