The Gazette of Colorado Springs recently published a series about the psychological struggles of a group of Iraq War veterans who'd been arrested for violent crimes at home. But while doing that reporting, journalist Dave Philipps uncovered another story about war crimes committed in Iraq. Philipps explains why he was an unlikely reporter to be writing this piece.

a great investigative journalism piece telling an awful story
I seem to recall a translator from Ft. Carson was prosecuted for cowardice early on in the war. He had a panic attack upon seeing the mutilated body of an Iraqi who was cut in two by machine gun fire. I don't believe his panic put his comrades in danger. Seems the Army command at Ft. Carson can be quite vigorous in military discipline when it wishes.
Calling every event that falls into the grey area of the rules of engagement a war crime is intellectually dishonest and a disservice to the rule of law in combat zones. It is like saying that because kayaking one section of rapids is dangerous, the entire river start to finish is deadly.
