We rely on Google to deliver the most accurate and helpful search results. But what if an online business could game Google's search algorithm to be listed first by providing terrible service? David Segal of The New York Times talks about an online merchant who did just that and Google's subsequent response.

Can A Small Search Engine Take On Google?

Comments [32]
Believe none of what you hear and only half what you see! Although google is a great website, I do question some of the information on it. Google helps with homework, social life, and even fashion/style. Google has been a great invention and now is basically the monopoly on the web. I just hope they do not take an unfair advantage with this power and use it wisely.
Twig almost sounds like a morning show... with a tech bent of course. I can't say I learned any more about the case. Relevance? No follow. Unless you really need to hear it from a group of people sitting around and chatting. The NYTimes story about Borker's arrest is much more interesting. Purely my opinion though.
And by the way, to the single person posting from Raleigh, you're not fooling anyone.
What is it with all these people raving about Google? It's just a bloody search engine!
Google should put a handle on the difference between criticism and a buzzing website. Although this may take some time it would definitely prevent people from being easily deceived. Also people need to do research on different companies or businesses before consumers buy!
I think why people use Google so much is because Google can help u with anything and everything. whether its doing work, trying to find jobs, applying for college. what ever u need to do its on Google its a helpful resource for everything. its very knowledgeable but is to much dependable at the same time.
I have never thought about how google doesn't differ between negative attention and positive attention. I have used google for for many projects and all different types of things.
I love Google. I use it all the time, and it always gives me what I'm looking for. When ever i don't know something or i just want to know a fun fact i always "google it". Its a wonderful tool.
Google has been a huge tool in aiding me to complete a lot of school assignments throughout my school career. Even though it is helpful in getting you information, the information/website are not always reliable. Anything can be put on the internet by a n y o n e so you have to moderate and pay attention to which websites you decide to use.
Google was like the best resource out there for a while. I used to use google anytime I couldnt find the answer for an assignment or question. When buying something off of the internet I dont think i would go to my first source off a google unless i am certain about the URL. That is just a bad way to go about it and that is what got her in the situation she is in.
Currently, Google is one of the most used search engines World Wide. It helps people with directions and weather. Google is one of the most convenient sites because it has EVERYTHING!
I do use Google for basically anything I am searching for, but I know better than to just go with the first results that pop up. I usually look into site I already know are dependable, especially if I am buy something online. If I am not familiar with a company, then I do research on its dependability. I don't believe I would ever be in this lady's predicament.
When it comes to finding locations, searching certain things, wanting more information, etc. The first thing that comes to mind is "let me google it". Google is just one of those search sources that is much help regardless of what information it gives you. Most look at it to be a reliable source and is continued to be used.
cause i know i always go to google on a project, paper anything, everything
well first off i love google ! & i agree we may us it too much, but google has been helpful for me, I don't know about everyone else, but i find it funny that DecorMyEyes.com shipped her some counterfeit designer eyeglasses.
I think that google is one of the best searching sources things to get accurate information and research. We all use google everyday for various reasons to look up things like images, locations, and information.
google is one of the best search engines by far. it's not good for just information like trying to get to a website for a paper but it's also good to find pictures. google's search engine is something that everybody uses no matter what age group your in. point blank good is quick and easy and i would recommend it to anybody that needs help finding something. who ever made the google search engine probably doesn't have to work another day in their life. google has take over other search engines like yahoo. etc.
google is one of the best search engines made. anything the you want google can help you find and to me it's more accurate than any other search engine. i think that everybody that uses google for the most part is satisfied. it's easy for anyone of any age to use. it's not just good for information but also for pictures. and it also helps to lead to other great websites. who ever came up with google is making a great deal of money.

Personally i think google is one of the best searching website to get accurate information and research. It has been one of the most used websites for research and everything else such as images and locations.
Have you ever been stuck on something & the first thing that pops in your head is .. why dont I GOOGLE it ? Well, I can honestly say I have , google has been a search engine that everyone & their mom uses , they use it from the smallest things like tieing a tie to more complicated things like making a three-layer cake . However, people willl find anyway possible to get their names out in the vast world of technology , but look at it this way .. google has never dissatisfied me - so why give up on them now ?
Google is a wonderful site that I can honestly say has never let me down. Regardless of what I need to find, whether it is music, food, locations, books, or even a trending topic -- google is always the first source to turn to. But at the same time there is always someone or something finding their way to turn something good into something bad! : (
Google is a great tool but I have never heard of anyone using it to get popular by being nasty and hateful. To me something like that just kind of defeats the purpose. You may think you're acting like other famous mean celebrities like maybe Simon Cowell but really you don't have anything to your name other than what a jerk you are.
I love google because it solves all my problems and when ever i have a question i search it and the right answer comes up.
This was humorous to me. Though, it's not hard to believe that someone would use those tactics to get their rank up on Google. I do agree that we need to find better ways to differentiate between the sites that are getting hits for good reasons, and the ones that are getting hits for bad reasons .
Google is good for certain things but i do think that we have to be careful how much we trust these websites. I dont think that she put much time in seeing if other people had used him before and what their reaction was.
Google is great ! every time I need to look something up, that's the first website I go to, plus it is my home page on my laptop when I open Google Chrome or Internet Explorer. 9 times out of 10 it gives me the best result's.
Google is a great tool. It is so convenient and very useful. it is very accurate and we use if for searching just about anything.
Google is a wonderful tool. I know anytime I need to find a song, important date, some place to eat or just looking up random facts, I always turn to Google. Its the only place I know that you can type in your name and your actual history comes up.
I know me personally, Google has become a fond friend of mine. As soon as open Mozilla Firefox on my laptop, the first thing that comes up is Google and it's different logo's that it often has. Google is like a mass information storage thingy for EVERYONE. It has saved my life in many ways. It is just so convenient. You can download Google apps on your cellular device, this way you can access Google conveniently, even when you're on the go. I have nothing bad to say about Google; it has saved me! Lol
Borker was arrested today: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/12/07/business/07borker.html
we do rely on google for almost anything. information, images, directions, etc. google is the most accurate search engine with the most accurate results. why not use it? if its there for our personal use whenever we need it!
Good story, but not completely accurate. If you want a more thorough explanation in layman terms go this podcast: http://twit.tv/twig71
