TIME's editorial slant was always what used to be called 'Herald-Tribune' Republicanism. Premature cold war anti-communism, impatience with a certain kind of Popular Front liberalism on the 'right' side. Social liberalism, especially on issues like race - a function of the Upper East Side attitude toward lower-class white southerners - on the 'left' side. Wariness of domestic programs and spending unless done by Eisenhower Republicans.
The children of the Herald-Tribune Republicans, prep-schooled and Ivy Leagued, became liberal Democrats over the years, and TIME went with them. Interesting for some sociologist to look into.
