A SLAPP, or “strategic lawsuit against public participation,” is a little known but widespread threat to the First Amendment. SLAPPs are meritless suits brought by companies, individuals and sometimes the government, not to win, but to silence critics. Congress is now considering federal anti-SLAPP legislation. I've been waiting for one of these for years but, as usual, I figure they realize that I'd somehow turn the suit on its head, since I have only my government benefits to lose and that is going to happen to most of us, anyhow.
The kind of FOIA requests and SLAPP suits mentioned on today's show are two of the tactics used by the wireless industry to intimidate and thus manage public information about wireless radiation research and risks. Deep pockets have enormous power to mislead.
