One thing that I've been getting exhausted with in the eulogies is this idea that Jobs and Apple (or Pixar or anything else he's been involved in) are obviously precisely coextensive, and that anything a company he's involved with did must have been entirely his doing. I would have expected maybe to see a critical look at this phenomenon on OTM, but I guess not.
For much of the week there was this talk of 3 apples. One with Eve. (Come on! It was the fruit of the tree of knowledge, myth believers!) Then Newton's. Then Jobs'. Well, #1 is out but your song choice reminds that Jobs company name was inspired by the Beatles label, I always thought.
But all of his best designs of "what we want before we know we want it" are steals from Star Trek set designers. The original Mac was right out of Kirk's or Spoc's quarters and touch screen ruled Next Generation devices including tablets. I can just hear him saying, "It has to look like it belongs on the Bridge."
Steve Jobs' genius was his design-focus in removing the 'nerd' factor prevalent in most first or 2nd generation designs. He was a consummate adapter/innovator. He was NOT an inventor...It could serve as the definition of irony that the company that produced the '1984' commercial now makes most of its money charging a third for access to the playground that it controls. Apple products were pretty much "also-rans" in the marketplace until MFN and cheap Chinese labor brought the prices down. Quality has fallen, too, but quality is not a market definer in a time of rising technical capability and falling prices.
