On the Media Winter Internships

Thursday, October 06, 2011 - 03:25 PM

On the Media is currently looking for interns for our winter internship period, which runs from December through February. If you're interested, and you are a student or recent graduate, please follow the instructions below to apply!

On the Media is accepting applications from people interested in helping out with the production of the program. Internships generally last three months, are unpaid, and are part-time. They take place at WNYC Radio in New York City, where OTM is produced.

Qualifications

Inters must be currently enrolled in college (undergrad or post-graduate) or recent graduates. While we do not expect new interns to have any experience with radio production, some journalism experience is preferred. Basically, we are looking for applicants who are motivated, avid media consumers, and excited about learning.

Responsibilities

Interns are an integral part of OTM's staff and assist with all aspects of the show's production. They sit in on editorial meetings, provide research assistance, and perform various menial tasks involved in the daily running of the office. Over the course of the three months, interns learn basic production skills, including field recording and digital audio editing, and are eventually encouraged to produce at least one segment for the show.

Internship Schedule

The On the Media winter internship runs from December 1 through the end of February.

Application Deadline

The application deadline for our winter internship is October 31.

How to Apply

Please send us a resume and cover letter explaining why you want to be an OTM intern. We also ask that you include a separate document with answers to the following questions:

1. Describe two of your favorite OTM segments, and why you liked them. (All previous shows are archived on the website.)
2. Describe one or two segments or shows that you think were less successful. Why didn't they work for you?
3. Suggest two story ideas (one paragraph each) for OTM. These can be pitches for simple "host-interviews-guest" segments, or for longer reporter pieces with multiple voices. In addition to describing the idea itself, you should also include ideas for voices in the piece/interview.
4. Tell us about your "media diet." (favorite magazines, TV shows, news sources, etc.)

Applications must be submitted by mail AND electronically.

Send snail-mail materials to:
Jamie York
On the Media, WNYC Radio

Hi, will the show be taking on Spring interns as well? If so, are the requirements the same? Thanks.

Obviously, the more time you can devote to the internship, the more that you will get out of it. That said, we will work with you to find a schedule that can accomodate other part time work.

WNYC studios are located in Manhattan.

Alex Goldman

John

How are you supposed to live in New York City for three months without any payment? Are the days you work determined before hand, so you have the ability to get a part time job. And is the studio on Manhattan?
