It began with a single tweet. Last Friday, at 11:33 A.M. the AARP tweeted "We Miss You, Biggie." Yes, the American Association of Retired Persons tweeted a succinct, moving elegy to a giant of the rap world. Biggie Smalls, aka the Notorious B.I.G., aka Big Poppa, aka Christopher Wallace. Wallace had a brief but phenomenal career writing songs about his rise from poverty to wealth (lyric: I made the change from a common thief / to Up Close and Personal with Robin Leach) and his violent past (lyric: I never thought it could happen, this rappin' stuff / I was too used to packin' gats and stuff). You know, stuff every AARP member can relate to. [Editors note: 'gats' means guns].
Last Friday was the 15th anniversary of Wallace's murder. He was just 24, but had already produced hits like Juicy (below), Big Poppa, and Hypnotize.
Perhaps because there's no apparent reason why the AARP would tweet out a remembrance of a hip-hop star, the tweet was a big hit on Twitter, spawning the hashtag #NotoriousAARP. The AARP blog pulled out some of the best tweets here.

Not a huge surprise that a tweet was created for Biggie; "We Miss You Biggie," but it was a surprise that AARP started the tweet. Biggie Smalls was a great rapper and believed in singing about hard life and how to grow from it. Although Biggie was murdered after only being famous for a small amount of time, AARP must believe that he made a huge impact on the music industry during that time. Millions still listen to his music and learn from the lyrics, but the point is not to get out of hand. It’s one thing to miss someone but another to try to bring them back. I heard that 2Pac was a hologram for a memorial concert, suppose ably they used 3D graphic of him to create him on stage rapping and interacting with the audience. Was the media bored of the new up incoming rappers and decided to bring back a legend Let's just hope we don’t get to dependent on holograms to entertain us.
Just plain cool...
I love it when you call out "Big Poppa."
