OTM Staff Picks Volume 27

OTM's weekly round up of our favorite things. If you're interested in what OTM producers like, this is the post for you.

Every Frank Ocean song I hear just makes me stop whatever I am doing and listen. His voice is incredible, as you can see for yourself in this song, “Thinking About You”:

Sarah's pick has inspired me to pick Billy Ocean. Picking Billy Ocean is tricky, however, because it means I've got to pick one song to embed and, Jesus, it's hard. So many hits. I'll go with "When the Going Gets Tough, The Tough Get Going." The connection with Jewel of the Nile puts it over the top.

10th round, and still catching mad beatdowns, so I retreat back to my old stomping ground. Regroup and lounge, put on a couple of pounds, and make plans to create the raw, homegrown sound.

Man, I've had a craving for Nasi Lemak. Wake up in Malaysia to the sound of scooter horns and sweltering heat. Put on shorts and flip-flops and head out to the nearest corner. Choose a plastic stool and order kopi-o (should be strong coffee without sugar/accept that it's never without sugar) and nasi lemak. The coffee (which may have been roasted with butter) is prepared for you by steeping the grounds in what looks like a long sock. Nasi Lemak is served in a bannana leaf and consists of rice cooked in coconut milk along with fried anchovies, salted peanuts, sliced hardboiled egg, sliced cucumber and sambal belacan (one of a passel of Malaysian varieties of sambal paste, belacan is pounded fresh chilis, toasted shrimp, sugar and lime juice). Wolf it down with the rest of the neighborhood who's pulled up a plastic stool for 5 minutes of pure, joyful culinary nationalism (it's a breakfast that's also considered the national dish). Nasi Lemak is a stirring tribute to the 4 food groups, a way to wake up your palate (sweet, salty, spicy, sour) and so unbelievably good that you try to just enjoy it, ignoring the nagging knowledge that in just a few weeks you won't be able to find anything but saccharine imitations.
