When the Messenger Was Murdered

August 31, 2007

Chauncey Bailey, editor of the Oakland Post, was killed last month allegedly for investigating Your Black Muslim Bakery, an establishment long connected to violent crime. East Bay Express editor Steven Buel says the murder has brought much needed attention to a dangerous organization that his paper covered in 2002.

I was taken aback while listening to an otherwise riveting story about the murder of Chauncey Bailey in Oakland. The editor of the East Bay Express said in a race for mayor, there were references to "hook nosed Jews" and related comments to Jews running the world. The editor went on to say that Oakland, being politically correct, gave such language a "pass?" He agreed it was virulently anti-Semitic, but since when is that language politically correct? Perhaps I am missing something, but I don't think the questioner (Mr. Garfield) really called Mr. Buel on this comment. If that is politically correct in Oakland, remind me to take that city off my list of places I would want to visit.

I am glad that OTM finally aired a segment on Chauncey Bailey's murder. Now I have one question: Why did it take almost a month for the segment to air?

Bailey was killed on Aug. 4th because he was doing his job. Surely the assassination of a journalist was worthy of more timely mention.

San Francisco

In the 1970s I worked with Chauncey Bailey at the black paper in San Francisco. Chauncey was a very solid reporter who was arguably the most serious reporter on the staff. I was shocked when he was murdered. I think OTM should do a follow up around the media in the Bay Area, particularly the Oakland Tribune where Chauncey worked for a number of years. The 'obits' stated that Chauncy left the 'Trib' for 'ethical' reasons but that has never been elaborated on in any report I have read.. It might also be worthwhile to do a story on coverage of the Oakland PD which has not covered itself in glory following Chauncey's murder. Most recently, the Tribune reported that the Oakland PD said the shotgun used to murder Chauncey was used in other crimes (9.20.07). The following day the San Francisco Chronicle reported that the Oakland PD was incorrect in this assessment and wrote, "a police technician" made a mistake. And, finally, the person who 'confessed' to Chauncey's murder is now the subject of several stories which stated that a senior person in the 'Your Black Muslim Bakery' interviewed the suspect, Mr. Broussard, in jail and convinced him to falsely admit to the filling with the promise he would only be charged with "manslaughter." The Oakland PD did NOT record that conversation.
