Larry Craig
Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho)

Stalling Tactics

August 31, 2007

As reported in Roll Call Monday, Sen. Larry Craig (R-Idaho) was arrested mid-June on suspicion of lewd conduct in an airport restroom. Since the early 1980s, rumors of Craig’s sexuality, and honesty, have followed him everywhere – everywhere, that is, but the Idaho Statesman. Managing editor Bill Manny explains why his paper held the story.

Bob, in the intro you said the "Distinguished gentleman from the state of Ohio." I think you meant Idaho.

Senator from IDAHO, not Ohio! East Coast bias I guess :-).

Love your show.

Bob, The mental map from the New Yorker cartoon has had too much sway in your mind. It is time for you to go on a road trip. Come to our house and see where Ohio is. However, I can understand your confusion since Ohio potatoes are so delicious. While neither of our senators is in a sex scandal, one is sleeping with a member of the media.

Please reconsider your use of the word "gay" to describe people such as Larry Craig. Larry Craig is a man who (probably) has sex with men. Gay is a self-identification that connotes a certain level of pride or at least acceptance.

I love your show.

Bob, you did not discuss what to me is the most interesting aspect of this story from a media angle. How is it that Roll Call got this scoop? You said it was leaked, but from where? In the taped post-arrest interrogation Sgt. Karsnia tells Craig “I don’t call media, I don’t do any of that type of crap.” But if it was indeed leaked by the police, why to Roll Call instead of the Idaho Statesman or a larger national media outlet? Was Roll Call tipped off by a Hill staffer?
