A report released Monday by Amnesty International alleged that Chinese media repression, arrests of dissidents and other human rights abuses have not eased in anticipation of the world's focus on Beijing. These embarrassments would seem to undermine China's dream of showcasing its economic miracle for the world. But the Asia Society's Orville Schell says that to know China's history was to see this behavior coming.
I'd like to say that to know western's tradition of demonizing China was to see this kind of report coming.

The commentary was spot on; China completely reniged on its commitment to provide unfettered Internet access to the international media, and the government has behaved in an utterly cowardly fashion by banning protests and activists and it should be criticized for doing so.
The rebuttal I've oft-heard "well the US abuses human rights too" is hardly valid; two wrongs don't make a right. China should be seeking to raise the very low bar of the US's collective history on oppression - not meet it.
