The progressive movement’s media presence has grown exponentially during the Bush presidency. Bob Garfield talks with Eric Boehlert, a senior fellow at Media Matters for America, about how the growth happened and what the future holds.
mr. boehlert is being disingenuous. he is not sensitive enough to the likelihood that mediamatters et al will become the new Fox. "Infrastructure building," for instance?
Where are the tough questions penetrating the robotic recitation of talking points that we have come to expect from OTM?
The left's infrastructure is not the media. It is the academy and by extension of the academy's influence on the media that leads to the misconception. One I hope will be remedied in future segments.
The differences between Mr. Beohlert's robotic recitation of talking points, so much so that he should be paid by the Center for American Progress Action Fund for this interview instead of the Center for American Progress, stands in stark contrast to Mr. Douthat open and honest discussion of the political landscape.
OTM should be more aware of and open to guests that commit journalism such as Mr. Douthat on your show as opposed to guests such as Mr. Boehlert peddling his progressive propaganda.
For replaying the SNL parody of Keith Olbermann, you sir, have lost all your credibility and should resign forthwith...
How could you not mention Air America Radio, Ed Shultz, Nova M radio, and other progressive AM talk radio as part of the massive landscape change from 5 years ago. They serve as a counter weight to the right wing hate radio exemplified by Limbaugh, and have been out ahead of many of the stories that NPR, and other respected news outlets later took seriously enough to devote resources to. I am a sophisticated news consumer and recognize that on occasion, there is too much self-indulgence and red meat on the AM airwaves, but to their credit, talk radio shows have much greater consistency and tenacity than other press. In any case, your review of the changed media landscape with Boehlert (who interestingly appears on AM progressive radio on a weekly basis) was conspicuously lacking mention of Air America, et. al. There is NO progressive media. There isn't even informative media. Only the narrow dribble and thoughtless repitition that never evokes critical thinking or debates the deeper issues. NEVER...
In my opinion, the media caters to war mongering, pharmaceutical and genetic manuipulators interests and has little interest if any, in truly helping create an informed citizenry
The lack of a truly informative media is explained by what Bob frequently refers to when discussing the decline of newspapers. There is no business model. As soon as there is a business model, the media become a pawn of the businesses that sponsor them.
Even Public Broadcasting has a business model, as evidenced by the many corporate sponsors which, at the least, have a more organized, focused influence on content than the listeners, even the ones who can afford to pledge of which I am not one.
I did love SNL’s lampoon of Olbermann. Even if I often agree with him, his delivery is way too over the top.
