The Islamic Republic of Iran turned 30 this week. Journalist and author Azadeh Moaveni has spent years living and reporting there. In her new book, Honeymoon in Tehran, she writes about the many difficulties journalists face in Iran. Chief among them: the government minder, who Moaveni calls "Mr.X" in her memoir.
As a guy whose recently deceased cousin was the motorboat driver for the Shahrina and seen photos of an aunt and uncle at the royal table, I would never be allowed the opportunity to examine Iranian life today, but even if I had to put up with another Mr. X, I would find it fascinating!
I originally supported the Revolution, in the hope that a true democracy would emerge and I, frankly, haven't given up hope yet. Didn't I hear on NPR from a woman who taught Nabokov's Lolita in Tehran?
