Psychology of Sacrifice

August 07, 2009

What drives a journalist, like Russia's Anna Politkovskaya, to risk their life to pursue a story? Reporter Terry Gould profiled 7 slain journalists in 5 countries to try to answer that question. He found a common psychology among those who know they'll be killed for their reporting but press on anyway.

THESE THREE STORIES MAKES ONE OF THE VERY BEST 'ON THE MEDIA' SESSIONS EVER...IT IS ALSO INTERESTING THAT EVEN AFTER THE THE FINE REPORTING OF FINANCIAL EXCESS AND GANGSDTER LIKE COLLUSION IN THE FINANCIAL INUSTRY, EVEN AFTER NUMEROUS REVELATIONS AND EXPOSUSRE....THE PRESS CAN AFFECT LITTLE. IT IS VERY DESPAIRING

Excellent piece, and while I do appreciate your link on the website to the latest developments on the Politkovskaya trial, I would love to hear OTM devote some time on air to what's been happening in the case in the nearly three years since her murder.

(And by the way, Mr. Garfield: Anna Politkovskaya's last name is pronounced with the stress on "ko", not "ska". А́нна Степа́новна Политко́вская.)
