Big Enough to Fail

November 13, 2009

Last week, Comcast moved one step closer to acquiring NBC-Universal when the two companies reportedly agreed on a valuation of NBC-Universal at around $30 billion. The idea of combining distribution and content has always seemed like a good idea to media moguls, but Craig Moffett, analyst at Bernstein Research, says it never really works out.

Bob, it would have been interesting to get Moffett's thoughts on your "Comcast is doomed" thesis from a couple weeks ago or was that supposed to have happened by now.

Comcast has a history of denying channels they own to competing distributors. For example, they have refused to let DirecTV and Dish Network carry their Philadelphia Sports Channel since its inception.

Also are they going to allow MSNBC to continue its progressive talk programming?

As a new ultra-basic subscriber, Comcast allowed me to view MSNBC from July until mid-October - along with CNN - until they cut them off without explanation but with the obvious hope they I would have developed a taste for the dreck but since every MSNBC program repeats exactly the same stories as if the audience is seeing them for the first time with each new host, I can't imagine why it should concern us whether Comcast will boycott other services over it.

The only reason I chose Comcast was so I could, for the first time, receive the three public access channels I helped found back when cable was king. It turned out that they neglected to inform me that I would need one of their digital boxes to receive them all and, so, when I made my appointment to hook it up I could not help but add, "I guess this is why someone had to start a website called Comcast must die!"

Maybe I'll do a pubic access show by that name (or did you copyright that, Bob?). And convince the new management to take their programing to the web.

Then, again, if Bob is even close to correct, funding for the entire public access facility will end.

The repeat was another Internet glitch, I assure you.
