All-American Runner

Friday, November 06, 2009

Mebrahtom Keflezighi was the first American in 27 years to win the New York City Marathon. Cameron Stracher, the publisher of the New York Law School Law Review and author of a forthcoming book about the American running boom in the 1970's and 1980's, discusses why he thinks American running was on the decline and what Keflezighi's win means for the future of the sport in the United States - and what an All-American runner means anyway.

This is no surprise; they did the same thing with Kristy Yamaguchi.

To white Americans, to be American means to be white.

One reason the race may not be covered as a sporting event is that there are so many people competing, many of whom are not competitive runners. Stop allowing people to finish the race in 6+ hours or more and the event will get more respect from the athletic community.

He is a good example of an immigrant, possibly muslim that loves America, I saw him embrace the Flag.

I was not born here and am 100 % American, form Marine.

Who is this guy? Don't pass over the idea, and fact, that evolution leans on the side of Africans and Americans of African decent. Living in Colorado, for us young settlers, is not the same as living in African Mountains like Kilimanjaro and Kenya.

To grow up in San Diego from 12 years old, attend high school there, go on to UCLA, and still find Americana elusive. shocking but not surprising. Compare Peter Jennings, more American - arriving at 26 yrs old and being firmly embedded as Americana as a Canadian citizen. (He did later become a dual citizen-2003).

Clearly, young settler, evolution leans on the side of misinformation and facile tropes for misanthropes. (Whew - thought you were serious there for a moment.)
