Increasingly, companies are paying users of social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter to hype their brands online. The Federal Trade Commission has responded by updating its rules to make sure ads are identified as such. But author and blogger Andy Sernovitz says regulating the ads will be difficult.

Interesting discussion, but you made a grievous error in attributing the line "I don't have to show you any stinking badges" to Eli Wallach. You are remembering Wallach from The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly. The famous line that you quoted (actually misquoted: I think you said "We don't need no stinking badges") was not from this movie, but from The Treasure of the Sierra Madre, by John Huston, based on the B. Traven novel. The perennial character actor who uttered your line was rather Alfonso Bedoya, veteran of such stellar cinematic treats as Doña Bárbara, Streets of Laredo, Border Incident, The Black Rose, and The Big Country, besides his role as "Gold Hat" in the Bogart/Huston/Traven classic.

Oh, yeah, as I scrolled down, it was suddenly coming to me.

It’s an episode of Max Headroom, again, the Matt Frewer vehicle from the '80s. In fact, the premiere episode about adverts, super-short burst of t.v. advertising that caused especially sedentary people's heads to explode and Max's alter-ego, real life reporter investigates!
