Reporters have a rule of three: if they can come up with three examples of similar occurrences, they can convince themselves that they’ve discovered a full-blown trend. Spotting and detailing trends is a cottage industry within the media, which means many of those latest crazes are based less in reality than in a need to come up with story ideas. Indeed, trend writing is a constant in journalism, as Bob reports.
