The Urban Dictionary, where anyone can look up some of the most clever and most vulgar words and phrases in the English language, turns 12 this year. Its founder Aaron Peckham talks about a few of his all time favorite entries in a conversation that originally aired in 2009.

Id have to agree with the previous comment by Zach hinton. Urban Dictioary is genius and the definitions are fun and realistic.
Bri: A girl too cute, too perfect, too unique, and petite. She's a definate good choice in being with. She's a beauty inside and out without a doubt.

I feel as though Urban dictionary is similar to the conversation we were having this past Thursday. Aaron Peckham said that at first, he and his friends used the website to "document the way they talked." Now however people can submit any word that they feel is missing and have it added to the website.

I feel to a small degree, that some of these words are used more and more in society and people reiterate them from websites like this and TV. And in a sense many of the terms are coined just for sheer entertainment. People get offended by the words on the website just like the actions they see on TV and need a scapegoat. I think that's obsurd because you have to physically put in the address to access the site.

I personally like the site and enjoy all of the definitions that I have read. Of course its not very educational but it is entertaining and whether people like it or not a website like this would have come along eventually. This is much easier to block than a news broadcast with gaphic material. Parents can easily block it from children with no worries of them seeing the harsh language.

urban dictionary is definitely not a educational site, it is a leisure site. the name of it "Urban dictionary" give a hint that its urban definitions, and if you think of other urban ideas such as an urban myth, could be humorous therefore when you visit a sight like urban dictionary you shouldnt be looking for literal definitions. And the words and definitions on urban dictionary may be offensive to some people but these are urban terms or slang terms that people may use and the website is a way for people who may not know the terms to look them up like a webster's dictionary for more formal words.

my friends or family because this website contains slang definitions for acts violence, drugs and sex. This isn't appropriate for a family household but for a group of adults with the ability and maturity to know right from wrong this website is okay.
I think this report was mostly true and to the point but the creator Aaron peckham does leave out some of the websites flaws including the very graphic material that this website contains. I would recommend for users and possible users to use this site wisely and with the intent for shear comedy and not as a trusted information source.

Overall this website is completely useless unless you are using this website for just a pure comedic purpose. Frankly i also believe this website should not have the word "Dictionary" in it.

Personally I believe that urban dictionary is useless if had to find a word for a class or something. But I would use it to find clever and funny words.

The name of the report is “Word” and it was aired April, 08, 2011. The Urban Dictionary turned twelve years old. The reporter Bob Garfield is discussing how the Urban Dictionary is used and when it is reasonable to use with Arron Peckham, who is the founder of the Urban Dictionary. He also tells why he created the dictionary and his thoughts behind it.
We agree with Bob Garfield that the Urban Dictionary is very useful. For Example” if you are heavily intoxicated and it’s 3 am and you’re puzzled over the meaning of the word, say, “skank” and you’re less concerned with scholarship than street cred.” This is just one of the many instances where you would use the Urban Dictionary. One reason why Arron created the Urban Dictionary because he thought a dictionary would be more efficient if the definition was written by normal people who speak the language.
In today’s time many young people use the Urban Dictionary without even knowing it. Slang is a way of short communication between young adolescence today. To young people the Urban Dictionary is useful while other will disagree. Those will most likely be the ones who don’t use that terminology or only believe in one dictionary.
Overall the Urban Dictionary has been useful. To prove our opinion it has been around 12 years. The Urban Dictionary has been a great way of communication in many instances. We recommend this to everyone so that they can have a full conversation in a least amount of time and words. Also, if adults are aware of the Urban Dictionary and study it they will be able to communicate in a variety of way. Most importantly they will connect with their kids.

I can honestly say that I support the urban dictionary. It is a great tool to use when you need to find out what a word means in terms of slang. I fully support the urban dictionary and congrats on the 12th year anniversary !

Urbandictionary.com has definitely evolved over the years. I go to it sometimes for a small laugh and also for definitions on slang. I wouldn't call the definitions there of "dictionary status", admittedly since practically any word/phrase definition is able to show up on there. The worth of said definition is graded and moderated via a thumbs up/down voting system.
All in all, I wouldn't rely on it for real information, but only use it to look up funny and creative phrases.

Haha I love urbandictionary.com . I commonly go to the website just to search up my name or friends name to see what they say...surprisingly, the definition is usually true.

It's too bad you cut out the part of the interview where Peckham mispronounces the word "row". That moment-- along with his description of the site's contributors as "random people"-- summed up for me the site's worth.
