So-called chat bots are all over the internet – usually trying to sell us something – and it’s becoming harder and harder to distinguish actual humans from the sophisticated software designed to emulate humans. Technology writer Clive Thompson, who blogs at, encountered exactly that dilemma recently when he got a message from someone with the handle babygurl01475. Thompson explains what happened when he engaged.
