The Retro Report

Friday, September 06, 2013

Beginning its second season this week, The Retro Report is a video series that looks at reporting from the past to re-examine its accuracy, and follow up on what happened after the media moved on. Bob talks to Retro Report publisher Taegan Goddard about the stories the Retro Report has looked back on.

In the interview, facts were mis-stated. I did go to the RetroReport episode (so the interview worked to drive me there) and found the wording was correct in the report.

What I heard in the interview was that Smokey the Bear encouraged us "not to use campfires and not to light matches in national forests".
Actually, there was a more practical and responsible approach in the campaign - prevent forest fires, make sure your fire is out (dead out!), don't play with matches.
I think the message in the 1960's was to be competent and careful, not to avoid.

The mistake bothers me - perhaps the person being interviewed just intensified the story.

Uh, well, it's probably still not a good idea to use crack or ANY drugs while pregnant. Y'know, just to be safe.
Is it possible that maybe, just maybe, officials were concerned about the health and welfare of babies?!

btw: Why does every guest on this show begin their reply to a question with "So,..." ? Very annoying.
