A Candidate for European Parliament Is Running Her Campaign On Grindr

This feels like one of those ideas simultaneously so simple and so smart I'm mad at myself for not having thought of it first.

Irish politician Phil Prendergast, a member of the EU's European Parliament, knows how to target a demographic in a way that few candidates are savvy enough to. After announcing her hopes to become the head of the European Parliament's LGBT Intergroup (the equivalent of a subcommittee in American Congress) she has begun advertising her candidacy on gay dating app Grindr.

Predergast has been outspoken in her support of the LGBT community:

I have been one of the loudest voices in the European Parliament on LGBT issues such as homophobic and transphobic bullying, and marriage equality.

I think the importance of having an Irish voice lead the Intergroup is underscored by the fact that in 2015 we will hold the first positively-worded referendum in the world- giving people the option of legalising as opposed to banning- gay marriage.

I'm really interested in seeing how this affects Prendergast's election. It seems like targeting a passionate minority that you specifically cater to seems like a surefire vote winning tactic.
