A Candidate for European Parliament Is Running Her Campaign On Grindr

Monday, March 31, 2014 - 02:39 PM

This feels like one of those ideas simultaneously so simple and so smart I'm mad at myself for not having thought of it first.

Irish politician Phil Prendergast, a member of the EU's European Parliament, knows how to target a demographic in a way that few candidates are savvy enough to. After announcing her hopes to become the head of the European Parliament's LGBT Intergroup (the equivalent of a subcommittee in American Congress) she has begun advertising her candidacy on gay dating app Grindr.

Predergast has been outspoken in her support of the LGBT community:

I have been one of the loudest voices in the European Parliament on LGBT issues such as homophobic and transphobic bullying, and marriage equality.

I think the importance of having an Irish voice lead the Intergroup is underscored by the fact that in 2015 we will hold the first positively-worded referendum in the world- giving people the option of legalising as opposed to banning- gay marriage.

I'm really interested in seeing how this affects Prendergast's election. It seems like targeting a passionate minority that you specifically cater to seems like a surefire vote winning tactic.
