Transcript

Getting information from Customs and Border Protection and the Department of Homeland Security is not just difficult for journalists and private citizens—even members of Congress have a hard time getting answers. Brooke speaks with Representative Beto O'Rourke of Texas' 16th District about the oversight needed to ensure more transparency from DHS.

And a crowdsourcing project to Shed Light on DHS!

I am frustrated (OK, enraged) often enough by issue brought to light on NPR. One of my biggest questions is, "What can I do?" It's easy to feel powerless and that my voice doesn't make any difference. If you can make a suggestion, I will do it. People in power, who have no oversight, are a very frightening thing. Maybe some folks feel like this issue wouldn't affect them, but this erosion of rights will just keep going unless we are vigilant. I am very sorry for the people who were so poorly and outrageously treated. Thank you for an eye-opening segment.

Just wondering: why don't you create a petition on http://petitions.whitehouse.gov/petitions ? If it gathers enough support, the administration will have to respond, and the response will be public.

As I research incidents between police and people that result in death for my website fatalencounters.org, I can tell you that anecdotal evidence suggests that often people are killed on the border without their names ever being published. This makes me think that at least sometimes even the deadly incidents themselves don't make the news. Also, the treatment of public documents as optional goes from the top to the lowest levels of government.

Thanks for bringing light to this under-reported abuse of power that I unfortunately, see replayed often w/little one can do to remedy the lack of oversiy and abuse by CBP.

I didn't catch the bill number that I want to support: to provide oversight of border authorities.
